France has always been renowned for its cycling holidays – from hard-core mountain climbs to leisurely pedals along the riverside, there really is something for everyone. We’ve put together some of our favourite cycling opportunities and paired them with nearby HomeCamper sites, allowing you to add variety flexibility to your French cycling holiday.

Bordeaux Vineyards

Famed for its wine production, the area of Bordeaux on the Western Coast of France is a reasonably flat and incredibly scenic region. Cycle through shady pine forests, skirt around peaceful lakes and lagoons, and pedal through spectacular wine-producing vineyards. It would be rude not to stop and sample the local offerings… Park your van at this family vineyard near Bourg, or pitch up near the beach at Saujon.

Corsica

This beautiful island in the Mediterranean provides ample mountain biking as well as road riding. Described by Corsica Cyclist as “the land that time forgot”, Corsica’s beautifully independent culture will have you slowing down to embrace the lifestyle of the island. Stop off for the night at this Olive Farm in Belgodére, or overlooking the beautiful lakes at Calacuccia.

Canal du Midi

Do you know what we love about canals? They’re really quite flat! Winding across France for 150 miles, the Canal du Midi meanders from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, offering ample opportunity for leisurely cycling in stunning scenery. Stay in a treehouse tent at Saint-Christaud, or in this beautiful garden in Bourret with its pool, sauna, and resident nutritionist and reflexologist hosts Severine and Gerard.

Pyrenées

For an extra challenge, push yourself to battle the inclines of the Pyrenées, cycling in the tracks of the famous Tour de France riders. One beastly ride is the Col du Tourmalet, only a 12-mile distance but rising a staggering 1,400 metres – not for the faint-hearted! After all that hard work, treat yourself to a glamping experience at Ladeveze-Ville, with luxury wooden cabins and a pool to indulge in some R & R for those aching muscles!
