What to visit in Reims?

A showpiece of the city of Reims, Notre-Dame Cathedral has the particularity of having been, from 816 to 1825, the coronation site of 33 kings of France. It is also where Clovis was named in 498. The architectural unity and remarkable statuary of this 13th century building make it a masterpiece of Gothic art. Decorated with magnificent statues of angels with wings spread, Reims Cathedral amply deserves its nickname of Cathedral of Angels. Once inside, the eye is immediately drawn to the brightness of the nave and the splendid stained glass windows, most of which are from the 13th century. Don't miss to admire the blue stained glass windows of the axial chapel designed by contemporary artist Marc Chagall.
Next to the cathedral, the Palace of the Tau, an ancient archbishopric where the banquets of the coronations were organised, now houses the Museum of the Work of Our Lady in which tapestries, sculptures, the treasure of the cathedral and objects related to the coronation are exhibited. The visit of the main monuments of the Champagne city continues with the Saint-Remi basilica, a superb Romanesque-Gothic building, and its museum. Located in the buildings of the former Saint-Remi Abbey, the museum evokes the history of the abbey and exhibits art collections from prehistory to the Middle Ages.
Also worth seeing in the city, Place Royale, surrounded by arcades, and Place Drouet-d'Erlon, very lively with its cafés, shops and restaurants.
The Hôtel Le Vergeur museum, housed in a 13th and 16th century private mansion, houses works of art, furniture and paintings.
Renowned for its buildings, the city of Art and History of Reims is also famous for its prestigious champagne houses whose cellars, carved in chalk, are open to visitors!

When to go to Reims?

The city of Reims is characterized by a temperate climate with a strong oceanic influence. The winters are very cold, contrasting with the mild and sunny summers. On the other hand, the rains, spread over the months of the year, influence the quality of Reims' climate over the seasons. For less risk of rainfall and overall bad weather, we advise you to go there during the spring and summer months!
