What to visit in the city of Le Mans?

Located in the west of France, Le Mans is a city in the Pays de la Loire region with a population of about 144,000. Known for its famous car and motorcycle racing, it also has the aforementioned label "Ville d'Art et d'Histoire", and its historic district has several monuments from the medieval period. You can admire the Saint-Julien cathedral, which you can access by a staircase that leads up from the Place des Jacobins: built between the 11th and 15th centuries, the cathedral's entrance is marked by a menhir.
In the old town, you will be able to stroll through narrow streets lined with stone or half-timbered houses, covered with slate. On the Place du Cardinal Grente you will see the Bishop's house, dating from the 16th century. Also don't miss the visit to the Queen Berangère Museum, as well as the Town Hall, former Royal Palace, an impressive group of buildings dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries. Around the city you can see the beautiful remains of the Roman wall, with four of the original five towers, and a pleasant medieval-style garden where some of the stone spheres that were projected during an assault in 1425 by the Earl of Salisbury remain.
